Founder of the Kiss it Better Appeal, Carmel Allen, decided to use Run or Dye to raise money towards her own campaign. Inspired by the phenomenal treatment that her daughter received at the hospital, the Kiss it Better Appeal raises money towards cancer research for children’s treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Many of our Run or Dye runners choose to fundraise towards a charity, which is a great way to give back to people whilst enjoying our family friendly event. Carmel did just that, raising money for her own cause, Kiss It Better. “I set up Kiss it Better when my daughter, Josephine, was just a one-year-old being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital for a stage three neuroblastoma. It was heart-breaking seeing her in so much pain. I would always comfort her by saying “mummy will kiss it better”, which is where the idea for the campaign originated.”
“I don’t know what it is about Run or Dye but the sun always shines on Penshurst Place that day. The atmosphere is full of love and excitement! Everyone starts throwing colour long before the race starts and the fun and games are contagious! It’s full of families of all ages and abilities, from grandparents to infants and pet dogs too!”
“It’s one of those great occasions where everyone talks to one another and children learn that life is good when we all look out for one another and smile and have fun. Run or Dye really puts the ‘fun’ into fundraising.”
“When Jojo was treated the outlook for children with solid mass tumours was not good, less than 60%. Outcomes are improving every year but there’s still lots to be done. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t look at my daughter and think I’m the luckiest mum in the world. I’ll be forever thankful to the doctors, nurses and researchers at Great Ormond Street Hospital.”
